    Labor Laws of the Republic of Korea, a book is an introduction in English to the labor laws of the Republic of Korea. JIPYONG and Hollym Corp., Publishers have released this book to help non-native Korean speakers and foreign corporations understand how Korean labor law is interpreted and applied in practice. Before this book, there was a lack of publication that ranged over the basics of Korean labor law in a comprehensive manner. Of course, one could refer to The Statues of the Republic of Korea, a book published by the Korea Legislation Research Institute that contains English translations of certain portions of Korean labor law. Up until now, however, it has been difficult to find any one book in English that provides interpretations of Korean labor law and careful analysis of how it is applied in practice.

    The Labor & Employment Practice Group at JIPYONG had long represented and advised a wide range of clients, including many foreign clients, on various labor matters. Through the representation of foreign clients, JIPYONG became aware that there was no reference book on Korean labor laws in English, and this made them explore the idea of publishing this book. Today, it becomes clear that Korean labor laws are not just for Koreans but are also for foreigners and foreign corporations. The attorneys and the US attorneys at JIPYONG as well as the US attorneys who specialize in labor law participated in writing this book. Especially a co-author and corporation lawyer of JIPYONG, Ji-hyung Kim has especially maintained his interest in labor law for three decades as a judge, Supreme Court Justice, and member of JIPYONG.

    Since this book Labor Laws of the Republic of Korea is intended to introduce the basics of Korean labor laws, it may be limited in extensive coverage of specific legal provisions or issues. However, the publication of this book will trigger others to publish more in-depth examinations of Korean labor laws in English. The literature on laws of a nation, written in languages commonly understood such as English, is an invaluable resource for foreigners in understanding such laws. JIPYONG and Hollym hope that this book can serve as a means by which people can increase their awareness of Korean labor law and how it is used in everyday, real-life situations.
