지은이 : 오원철 (吳源哲)
18년간의 공직 생활은 한국경제 발전사와 정확히 그 궤도를 같이한다. 경공업에서 시작해 중화학공업까지 그를 빼놓고는 한국의 산업화, ‘압축성장’ 방식인 ‘한국형 경제개발 모형’을 설명할 수 없는 이유다. 황해도 송화군에서 태어나 서울공대 화공과 출신의 엔지니어로 공군장교로 복무했고, 우리나라 최초의 자동차를 만든 시발 자동차 회사의 공장장으로 일했다. 상공부에서 산업화의 시작인 제1차 5개년 경제개발계획(화학 분야)을 입안하고 추진하는 실무 책임자의 역할을 했다. 청와대 경제수석으로서 1970년대에 중화학공업과 방위산업, 그리고 행정수도 이전계획 및 2000년대 국토계획, 기술인력 양성 및 각종 연구소 설립 계획, 중동 진출 방안 등을 입안하고 추진했다. 세상에서 가장 가난한 나라였던 대한민국이 눈부신 경제성장을 이룬 과정을 통해, 미래의 대한민국을 만들어갈 청소년들에게 공학의 비전을 알려주고 싶었다.
